What each term means.
What we say on Watch Ritual.
Where a retailer lists a lower price than the brand, we say so, and we state what the retailer says about its own warranty. For Watches of America reviews we note that the retailer lists a one-year warranty and that the manufacturer’s own warranty may not carry over, so readers should ask in writing before ordering.
How to check before you buy.
- Look for the retailer’s warranty and return terms.
- Ask whether the manufacturer’s warranty applies, and get it in writing.
- Compare the retailer price with the brand’s price; a large saving can mean a grey market.
- Keep the box, papers and invoice.
When grey market is acceptable.
If the saving is large and you accept the retailer’s warranty, a grey market purchase can be good value. If a manufacturer warranty matters most, buy from the brand or an authorized dealer. See also how to buy a watch online.

A few good questions.
What is a grey market watch?
A genuine watch sold outside the brand’s authorized dealer network, often with a retailer warranty instead of the manufacturer’s.
Is buying a grey market watch safe?
It can be if the seller is reputable and you accept its warranty, but the manufacturer warranty may not apply.
How do I check a watch warranty?
Ask the seller whether the manufacturer’s warranty applies and get the answer in writing.
Why are some retailers cheaper than the brand?
They may buy through different channels or discount more; check the warranty terms.
